Winter Break
Well winter break is upon us now. It hasn't really felt like it for me though. I've gotten up by 9:30 every day I've been on my break since Sunday. Tomorrow I'm going to sleep in a bit though, of course I need to get to bed since it's going on 2am and instead I'm writing in this thing since my Euchre partner reminded me that I hadn't done so lately. :-P
So this past week I've been "building stuff and things." I have to be somewhat secretive about them since it involves the robot course for this coming spring quarter. So Monday David and I went out in search of the p-card. Of course someone else was using it so David ended up buying some stuff just so we could build a prototype section to make sure it looked alright. With that done Monday I helped out with an outreach program that night that Joe does quite a bit of work with. He needed extra people to help drive kids and basically make sure they stayed out of trouble once we got there. If you've ever seen Dangerous Minds or any of those public school-type movies or tv shows I guess that sort of stuff really exists. So anyways I ended up driving over 5 kids in my car which seats 4 passengers (they managed to cram 4 in the back seat and tried 6 or so but couldn't get the door shut). Once we got there it was sort of a loosely setup program where they played basketball or did some crafts and then had some short skits and a contest where they decorated people up as Christmas trees. It seemed like everyone was having a good time and there was somewhat of a tie in to the Bible, but it wasn't the normal Bible study people are probably used to. I could see how this could be helpful to the kids that are really there to listen and get something out of it, but I think about half of them were just there because it was something to do. Either way it got them someplace where something positive was happening and hopefully that'll occur to all of them at some point.
Since David left Monday night, Tuesday involved me getting more materials to build the rest of the sections like the prototype and cutting down all the wood to make frames. Of course Lowes wouldn't have enough 4 foot sections in stock, and it was so difficult for the guy running the saw to cut 8 foot sections into 4 footers. I think I stood there about 45 minutes or so while he set the darn thing up, then of course other customers come around needing things cut also which just adds to the fun. So he kept asking me what this was for and if I was building a frame why didn't I just use plywood and why did I need them cut in half if I was going to cut them down more at home anyways. So after that ordeal I got home and managed to get started on the cutting. I didn't get finished since Liz showed up for Bible study, but I got a good start. So we went to Bible study and talked about the wise men and I had other stuff on my mind like the robot course and Christmas shopping and such so I couldn't really focus on the topic that much.
So then I went and spent the night at Liz's since that's what she wanted me to do once this week and got up early this morning to take my car in for some warranty work. They gave me a loaner vehicle which I just drove back home with and worked on more wood cutting. I got all that done and watched The Pianist. It was an interesting movie about the German invasion of Poland. It's just amazing that a group of people could come in and destroy the lives of another group of people just becuase they think differently.
Then my car was ready to be picked up so I drove back over to get that. It would have been free except I had to put gas in the loaner vehicle and somehow it took 4 gallons of gas for a 10 mile drive. I think the last person didn't fill it up, but oh well since the rest of the work was free I guess I can pay for a little extra gas.
So David and Claire returned from their trip to David's home and we had spaghetti. David mixed like 3 different jars of spaghetti sauce and made enough to feed an army. I guess that's good except now I don't have any sauce to make ravioli with until I go to the store. I guess it's only fair though since I did eat some of it too. So then we went to Best Buy and spent maybe 2 hours there just messing around and I bought some stuff. And now I'm here all by myself as usual. I think Claire and David are snuggling downstairs in David's bed. :-P So that's been this week thus far, and now I'm going to bed. Hopefully most of this makes sense since I'm half asleep now...
